U.S. Hockey Team Shows Strength Against Denmark
After a rocky beginning, the U.S. hockey team picked up steam, showcasing their potential as gold medal contenders. They led 2-1 after the first period and ultimately secured a decisive 6-3 victory over Denmark at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games on Saturday.
The Americans kicked off the second period with three consecutive goals, with Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators, Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin from the Vegas Golden Knights all contributing. Their offensive display was impressive.
Denmark, however, didn’t go down quietly. They managed to score a goal against Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins before the end of the second period, giving their fans a glimmer of hope.
Jake Guentzel added to the scoreboard for the U.S., followed by a late goal from Jack Hughes. It was a family affair, with both Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk, as well as Jack and Quinn Hughes, all making their mark on the game—with 14 different players managing to score for the Americans overall.
Though Swayman faced challenges early on, especially when Denmark’s second goal came from nearly mid-ice, he regained form as the game progressed. It’s likely that Connor Hellebuyck will start in the next match, while Jake Oettinger is also expected to see some action soon.
Shots on goal were heavily skewed, with the U.S. posting 47 and Denmark only 21.
The final preliminary game for the Americans is against Germany on Sunday at 3:10 p.m. ET. Given their strong performance so far, they enter this contest as the favorites again, and a win would guarantee their place in the knockout stage.
If they were to lose in overtime, there’s still a path forward, but a regulation loss might complicate things, particularly for Canada, which faces its own challenges against France.
Despite the weight of expectations, the U.S. team seems well-positioned, especially against a German squad that features just eight NHL players.
