Team USA Wins Gold in Women’s Ice Hockey
The U.S. women’s ice hockey team celebrated a thrilling victory on Thursday, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime to secure the gold medal at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. As the arena announcer prompted the crowd to rise for the national anthem, Team USA captain Hilary Knight expressed her enthusiasm, exclaiming, “This is awesome. This is awesome,” during the NBC broadcast.
Gathering with fans, the gold medalists proudly sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena. Forward Taylor Heise reflected on the emotions of the moment, saying, “I can’t believe you only get to hear your national anthem once, and that’s if you win. To hear that anthem… it means a lot to me, being here with my daughters and celebrating this big win.”
Knight stood firm in her assertion that the women’s ice hockey team represents “America’s team.” She said, “To represent your country and find success on a world stage, to hear the national anthem—it’s just incredible.”
In an iconic moment, Knight tied the game with just over two minutes left in regulation, marking her 15th Olympic point—a record for American players. Megan Keller clinched the victory with a backhand shot just over four minutes into overtime.
“This team is very determined. We never quit,” Knight remarked. “It’s a testament to our preparation and camaraderie.”
As attention now shifts to the men’s competition, Team USA looks to add another gold as they face Slovakia in the upcoming semifinal.
Reflecting on the women’s victory, coach Mike Sullivan praised the team, stating, “They will be an inspiration to the next generation of girls growing up in America. We couldn’t be more proud of them.”
