USC Baseball Dominates Nevada with 8-0 Victory
Just three pitches into the game, USC took the lead and it didn’t take long for the Trojans to extend their advantage, racking up a four-run lead after a few more batters and two home runs.
Before many fans were even fully settled in at Dedeaux Field on Thursday night, USC’s explosive offense was already on full display.
This early surge set the tone for a night where ace Mason Edwards maintained his dominance on the mound. Everything clicked, leading No. 18 USC to an 8-0 victory over Nevada, marking the Trojans’ fifth consecutive win.
The offensive fireworks were notably impressive, as Adrian Lopez, Jack Vasser, Andrew Lamb, and Walter Arbon all launched home runs. USC (39-12) has scored in double figures in three of its last four games, averaging an eye-catching 11 runs per game. Quite a turnaround for a team that was ranked seventh in the Big Ten for home runs, eighth in runs scored, and ninth in batting average prior to this game.
Coach Bashir reflected on the performance, stating, “It was a perfect match. Our pitching continues to do what it’s always done, and our hitters do a great job of scoring runs.”
Interestingly, the only thing that could be viewed as a downside was USC’s inability to extend their lead beyond eight runs in the third inning, despite Mason Edwards striking out 14 batters and allowing just seven base runners over his six innings.
Coach Andy Stankiewicz noted, “We lost five in a row to finish the game. So we need to improve in that area, but it was definitely a great start.” In the seventh inning, left-hander Ben Cushnie managed to navigate a tough situation with the bases loaded and no outs, contributing to the combined seven-hit shutout.
“That was huge,” said Bashir. “You expect the bare minimum. It was great that we were able to enter that situation and still come out on top.” It’s worth mentioning that this marked the ninth shutout for the Trojans this season.
What It Means
USC has made a strong return to the revamped Dedeaux Field this year, boasting an impressive 30-1 home record and fueling hopes for a regional spot in the NCAA Tournament.
With sixteen teams selected as regional hosts, the Trojans are well-positioned as they continue competing.
Turning Point
The game’s turning point came when Lopez homered on the third pitch he faced in the bottom of the first inning, kickstarting USC’s explosive four-run inning.
Following Bashir’s two-run homer on a full-count curveball with two outs, Ram added another powerful hit, completing the offensive onslaught.
“It’s good to give the pitchers some confidence and let them know they have a bit of lead,” Bashir observed, highlighting the team’s persistent approach at the plate.
Did You See That?
In an impressive defensive play, Lopez made a diving stop on a ball inside the foul line during the second inning, quickly throwing it to Edwards for an out.
MVP
Edwards shone on the mound, pitching six shutout innings while allowing just four hits, with his ERA now standing at 1.61. He tallied ten strikeouts, with only two runners reaching scoring position, both of whom were left stranded.
Notably, Edwards’ 142 strikeouts this season places him ninth in school history.
To the Next
The Trojans are slated to continue their series against Nevada with games scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
