In a massive turnout, almost 107,000 fans clad in white filled Beaver Stadium, ready to create a challenging atmosphere for Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans.
However, USC managed to dim the excitement of Penn State’s White Out.
In what’s known as one of college football’s toughest venues, No. 19 USC delivered a surprising 31-23 win on Saturday night, enhancing their record to 6-1 and finally securing a noteworthy road victory that had been just out of reach for Riley’s team.
Quarterback Jayden Maiava excelled, completing 21 of 33 attempts for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman receiver Trent Mosley, back from an injury, made nine catches for 111 yards and a touchdown, while running back King Miller contributed 102 rushing yards and another touchdown from 19 carries.
The Trojans’ offense was explosive, as it’s been throughout the season, although the defense displayed its usual ups-and-downs. Yet somehow, USC managed to persevere.
During the initial part of the game, the Trojans’ secondary seemed to confuse Penn State’s receivers with their free-range coverage issues, allowing them to roam without much resistance.
USC initially scored when Maiava connected with Mosley for a touchdown after a crucial fourth-down conversion. Penn State responded, but Maiava quickly countered with an 11-yard touchdown to Tanook Hines early in the second quarter.
Again, the Nittany Lions struck back.
Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht, who threw for 289 yards and a touchdown, took advantage of USC’s defensive mistakes. Both teams went into halftime tied at 17-17, with Ryan Barker hitting a 48-yard field goal just before the break.
For many USC fans, it was a familiar scene: Riley’s offense shined while the defense seemed ready to sabotage everything.
However, the second half brought a shift.
USC attempted to surprise Penn State with an onside kick to start the third quarter, but the Nittany Lions recovered, leading to a field goal and a 20-17 lead. USC fired back with what turned out to be the most vital drive of the night.
Miller managed a fourth-and-1 conversion and then, taking a pitch from Maiava, dashed for a 13-yard touchdown, putting the Trojans back in front at 24-20.
When Penn State pushed deep into USC’s territory again, the defense finally held strong, forcing another field goal that brought the score to 24-23 early in the fourth quarter.
Maiava then delivered a significant blow.
With time to assess his options against a three-man rush, Maiava calmly located Kayden Dixon-Wyatt for a 10-yard touchdown, increasing the lead to 31-23 with just over eleven minutes to go.
While USC had the lead, they still needed a final defensive effort, and this time, their criticized unit stepped up.
With Penn State on the verge of tying things up late in the game, Christian Pierce stripped the ball from Brett Eskildsen after a 25-yard catch, and Chasen Johnson recovered at USC’s 35-yard line, snuffing out Penn State’s comeback hopes.
Penn State had numerous chances but settled for field goals while USC consistently turned their drives into touchdowns.
This factor made all the difference.
For once, USC’s defense didn’t have to be phenomenal; it just needed to perform well when it mattered. And in Happy Valley, “good enough” turned out to be a resounding victory for the Trojans.
What it Means
Following their home defeat against Oregon, USC has bounced back with wins over Washington and now Penn State, which makes them bowl eligible and improves their Big Ten record to 3-1.
More critically, the Trojans have shown they can handle tough situations on the road.
There are still issues with the defense, but winning in Happy Valley requires a certain level of grit—something Riley’s teams haven’t consistently displayed.
Turning Point
Penn State had a chance to equalize with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Then Pierce made the crucial defensive play that USC needed.
He forced a fumble from Eskildsen following a 25-yard catch, and Johnson picked it up at USC’s 35-yard line.
Did you see that?
Mosley made a smooth return from injury, proving he hadn’t lost his touch.
His fantastic 21-yard catch during USC’s decisive drive kept the momentum going.

USC will take a bye week before heading back on the road to face Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
