The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has disclosed that 14,000 individuals in a single state are utilizing food stamps while owning luxury vehicles. This revelation comes as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to address fraud within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The USDA indicates that some individuals exploit loopholes, allowing those with substantial wealth to qualify for assistance, as reported on Friday.
Brooke Rollins, Secretary of the USDA, highlighted in a recent social media post that officials discovered these 14,000 recipients in one state driving high-end cars like Ferraris, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis.
“And this is only from one state. It’s crucial that we safeguard our nutrition programs for those who genuinely need them, rather than letting scammers take advantage of the system. These individuals are a burden on American taxpayers,” @VP’. She also indicated that 4.3 million Americans have exited SNAP, but there’s still a lot to do,” she noted.
According to the Fox report, Rollins emphasized that her agency aims to close loopholes in the broad categorical eligibility policy that allows individuals to obtain SNAP benefits despite having the financial means for luxury cars.
In November, Rollins mentioned that efforts would begin to curtail significant fraud and misuse in the SNAP program, further noting the issue of deceased individuals still receiving benefits. She later stated the USDA would review all programs to ensure benefits are given only to legal citizens.
“Currently, we’re requesting states to provide recipient information to tackle waste and fraud. Despite 22 Democratic-led states declining to share their data, we’re utilizing every tool available to ensure compliance,” Rollins elaborated.
On Thursday, she shared that 4.3 million individuals had already been impacted. Additionally, it was found that 186,000 deceased individuals were beneficiaries.
“For years, Democrats have permitted fraudsters to misuse SNAP, undermining this vast government initiative. The Biden administration expanded the program by 40%, seemingly to secure votes using taxpayers’ money. It’s hard to envision what might have unfolded if this program, along with many others, was allowed to expand unchecked,” Rollins commented on social media.
Vice President JD Vance commended Rollins on Friday, reflecting on the ongoing efforts to tackle substantial fraud in the SNAP program, criticizing the prior administration for allowing the situation to escalate.
“SNAP benefits should assist those who genuinely struggle to buy groceries, not those who can afford luxury items like Bentleys and Ferraris,” Vance remarked.
