Usha Vance Responds to Fashion Critics
Second lady Usha Vance light-heartedly addressed the fashion critics who took issue with her maternity wear in the New York Times.
Vance faced scrutiny over a particular coral dress she wore, which some linked to the administration’s political shifts. Fashion critic Vanessa Friedman notably critiqued Vance’s “stretchy, belly-hugging coral dress.”
In response, Vance humorously pointed out the absurdity of finding political significance in her choice of clothing. She posted on X Platform, saying, “Now that I know the political significance of the Old Navy $8.75 coral maternity dress I’m wearing, I can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic waistband pants and compression socks!”
She continued, “In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and fun stories with my kids,” linking to a video where she read a picture book with her husband.
Friedman had previously remarked on the timing of pregnancies among prominent women in the MAGA movement, suggesting it reflects the administration’s strategic grasp of aesthetics. She commented on how this has created a cohesive image of the White House’s stance on family and reproduction.
Vance also shared a receipt, proving she bought her bright coral dress for just $8.75, a significant reduction from its original price of $49.99.
Overall, in this exchange, Vance managed to effectively counter the criticisms directed her way.
She announced earlier in the year that she is expecting her fourth child, marking this as the first time a sitting vice president will be elected with a pregnant partner.
