USMNT embraced their World Cup opportunity with a strong victory over Paraguay

ENGLEWOOD, Calif. — Is America really a soccer nation?

On this memorable night, under the bright lights of Los Angeles, the U.S. men’s national team showcased a style of play that felt reminiscent of Brazil.

Since learning that this World Cup would be hosted on their home soil, the USMNT has emphasized their desire to ignite passion for soccer among Americans. Their impressive 4-1 win against Paraguay not only demonstrated relentless and beautiful soccer but also promises to inspire children nationwide to pick up a ball.

It’s more than just three points in Group D; it’s about impact.

“It’s a real dream,” stated Folarin Balogun, who marked his World Cup debut with two goals. “It was dreamlike.”

The U.S. looked ready as Weston McKennie found the net early on, catching Paraguay’s defense off guard.

With a fluid attack, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad kept possession, constantly finding openings in the Paraguayan defense, which struggled to respond.

“Being able to do this in America, with the crowd around you sporting red, white, and blue, is simply awesome,” said Christian Pulisic. “Hearing the American chant really pushes us forward.”

Pulisic, often analyzed for his club performance and statements, was a standout player until he was substituted in the second half. Paraguayan right-back Juan José Caceres found himself up against Pulisic with little success. Early on, Pulisic managed to outmaneuver Caceres and Gustavo Gomez, eventually leading to a foul against him that set the tone for the evening.

After a strong play from Jedi Robinson, Pulisic met Balogun’s cross to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute. The England-raised striker celebrated enthusiastically with the bench as the game shifted into even clearer dominance.

For the remainder of the first half, Paraguay struggled to maintain possession, and just before half-time, Malik Tillman’s quick strike added yet another goal.

Pulisic left the field at half-time, mentioning he felt optimistic despite a kick to his calf. Tyler Adams’ yellow card also raised concerns, as a second could lead to a suspension.

Overall, it’s hard to imagine the night going any better.

“Every time I heard the national anthem and saw the crowd singing along, it felt special,” McKennie expressed, noting the collective effort leading up to this moment as significant.

Throughout these friendlies, the U.S. showed glimpses of greatness. Perhaps these experiences against strong opponents in preparation for the World Cup paid off. While Paraguay struggled, the Americans appeared vastly superior.

“It’s truly special to witness,” Pulisic mentioned. “I feel like there’s a deep connection amongst us now.”

Anthony Robinson and Sergiño Dest were exceptional, while McKennie effectively navigated the space. Balogun performed as expected, having drawn keen attention from the U.S. team. Chris Richards, returning from an ankle injury, provided stability while a brief hiccup occurred as Tim Ream let a deflected ball slip leading to Paraguay’s goal.

Despite some controversies surrounding the World Cup—like exorbitant ticket prices and FIFA’s reputation—the domestic success of this tournament hinges on the performance of the USMNT.

Like a rocket ship taking off, the team launched into a promising future.

“I made the right choice to represent the U.S.,” Balogun reflected. “I’m really proud, and I want my fans to feel that pride too.”

A significant moment for the United States.
