USMNT says Christian Pulisic is 'fine' despite concerns over his injury for the World Cup

Practice Update on Christian Pulisic

IRVINE, Calif. — Following his ejection during the U.S. men’s national team’s victory in their World Cup opener, Christian Pulisic wasn’t fully involved in the practice on Monday, just two days later.

While he wasn’t on the field with the rest of the squad, a representative from U.S. Soccer reported that he engaged in modified training, focusing on individual drills.

Pulisic was not seen during the portion of practice that was open to reporters, causing some speculation about his status.

“He’s a good player,” remarked manager Mauricio Pochettino in a quick interaction with the media.

In the first half of Friday’s match against Paraguay, Pulisic stood out, contributing with a goal assist before being sent off after sustaining a kick to his left calf in training prior to the game.

Pochettino hinted that the decision to replace Sebastian Berhalter came quite suddenly.

“After the first half, when it started to get cold, I couldn’t even walk,” Pochettino reflected. “I hope it’s not a big problem… We had to make a last-minute substitution. I think it might have been better to avoid that. I really hope he can play in the next match.”

Post-game, Pulisic expressed optimism about his recovery, saying he expected to be fine.

The U.S. team is set to compete against Australia next Friday in Seattle, which gives Pulisic a full week to bounce back.

“Christian’s ready, guys,” midfielder Tyler Adams commented ahead of Monday’s practice. “Let’s take it easy. He had a knock a few days ago, but it’s not serious.”

Striker Haji Wright echoed these sentiments, noting that Pulisic was “doing well,” and adding, “I think he just got kicked. I doubt it’s anything major.”

Wright didn’t take part in the friendly matches leading up to the World Cup or in the game against Paraguay but reassured everyone that he was healthy.
