Utah Governor Addresses Political Violence

Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) stated that there’s only one person accountable for the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, urging people to move beyond political identities.

“There’s one person responsible for what happened here. He’s in custody and will face charges soon,” he mentioned at a press conference where the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the shooter, was announced.

He added, “Nonetheless, we all have the chance to change our behavior starting now.”

Cox expressed concerns about the escalating nature of political violence, saying it’s easy to point fingers at the other side without addressing the overarching issue.

His remarks came amidst backlash from several GOP members, including lawmakers, who criticized both liberals and the media following Kirk’s death.

Representative Derrick Van Olden (R-Wis.) harshly confronted a member of the Capitol Press Corps, declaring, “You guys here, you’re a mistake.”

When a reporter attempted to intervene, he responded assertively, saying, “I’ll knock it off.”

Van Olden accused the media of contributing to the violence: “You’re responsible for the assassination yesterday. You should be ashamed of yourself, that’s not good.”

Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) echoed similar sentiments, placing blame on Democrats. “The Democrats owned what happened today,” she said, suggestively implying that expressing oneself shouldn’t lead to violence.

When questioned about past attacks on Republicans, Mace pointed out that the focus should remain on Kirk, despite what critics said.

Former President Trump also weighed in, criticizing “extremists” during a Friday appearance on “Fox & Friends.” He acknowledged the presence of extremists on both ends of the spectrum but placed the blame on the left. “They are the real issue, and their tactics are aggressive,” he remarked.

Cox praised Kirk’s contributions to political discourse, which promoted debate and connections across the aisle. He appealed to all Americans—Republicans, Democrats, and others—to embrace a new approach moving forward.
