Utah student taken into custody for reportedly threatening to shoot conservatives

Threat Against Conservative Student at University of Utah

A conservative student from the University of Utah, Riley Beasley, reported a threatening encounter during an event organized by the conservative group Reawaken USA. He described the university’s environment as one fostering extremism, and he expressed relief upon hearing about the arrest of the individual who allegedly threatened him.

Beasley shared his experience with Fox News Digital, recounting the incident that occurred on January 12. They were involved in a debate, somewhat akin to those held by Turning Point USA, when a liberal student began to heckle them, using terms like “Nazis,” “fascists,” and “pigs.” According to Beasley, 21-year-old Dean Stewart escalated the situation by referencing the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk, allegedly stating he wished to shoot Beasley and others present at the discussion.

He quoted Stewart, recalling, “He told us, ‘I hope you die,’ and then he said, ‘Go Kirk,’ which I think suggested some sort of violent intent.” Beasley continued describing how Stewart confronted campus police, mimicking a rifle gesture and calling them derogatory names, all while police observed the scene.

Another attendee corroborated that Stewart expressed a desire to have the students “kirked.” Shortly after this altercation, he was arrested, facing charges for disorderly conduct, making threats, and not adhering to lawful orders, as confirmed by both prison records and the University of Utah.

Reflecting on the incident, Beasley noted that police acted quickly, having witnessed the events unfold in real-time. He highlighted a troubling trend of political violence, particularly from the left, which he believes is partially perpetuated by higher education institutions. He argued that universities often radicalize students, creating a “harbor of destructive hatred.”

Beasley also expressed discomfort about the risks involved in simply participating in discussions on campus, especially in light of recent events, including the murder of Charlie Kirk. His remarks indicated a concern that the safety of conservative voices in university settings is increasingly under threat. The dialogue he participates in appears overshadowed by fear of violence and hostility.

The University of Utah provided a response highlighting their commitment to a safe and inclusive environment but did not directly address the incident involving Stewart. Unable to reach Stewart for comment, the situation remains a focal point of discussions around campus safety and free speech.
