The University of Virginia has suspended all fraternity events for three weeks in light of an alleged hazing incident that left a student hospitalized in a coma on February 21st.
UVA’s Fraternity Council (IFC) said in a Feb. 27 statement that it is “aware” of the incident involving UVA’s Kappa Sigma chapter and is “updating the university’s response and ongoing investigation.” said. The council is “actively” working with UVA and state officials.
“Our primary concern is the health and well-being of those involved, and our thoughts and prayers are with the affected individuals, their families, and loved ones during this period,” IFC said in a statement. .
The Jefferson Independent, UVA’s student newspaper, reported Tuesday that police responded to a 911 call from a fraternity group after a student apparently fell backwards down the stairs during a night of heavy drinking.

Officials confirmed to the student outlet that the student was in a coma after a fall at Kappa Sigma House in Charlottesville.
“As a former student leader, I understand the importance and value of a healthy and strong student organization community. However, we are committed to prioritizing the well-being of the students who choose to be part of these organizations. We need to ensure that initiation activities are conducted in a way that is safe, healthy and, without exception, in accordance with University policies and standards of conduct,” said Kenyon, UVA Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer.・Mr. Bonner said in a statement on February 29th. “Let me be clear: hazing should never be included in these activities.”

Bonner added that the university is committed to eliminating hazing and substance abuse in its schools.
“As many of you prepare to take time off for spring break, UVA is committed to reporting suspected hazing, intervening appropriately to stop harmful behavior, and supporting a culture of safety. We ask you to consider your responsibility as a member of the family: the dignity and well-being of all community members,” Bonner said.

IFC added that UVA will issue a fraternity organizational agreement immediately suspending the Kappa Sigma fraternity “in response to the severity of the situation,” and that the board of trustees supports the university’s decision.

“This decision was made in commitment to anti-fogging efforts and out of respect for the current situation,” the statement said. “Additionally, as a result of the suspension, all IFC chapters must induct new members between March 21 and March 24. We will continue to work hard on this.”
