Controversy Surrounds Virginia Attorney General Candidate
The Democratic candidate for Virginia Attorney General is facing backlash over controversial remarks made recently. Jay Jones has been criticized after sending a message about a former Republican Speaker, which has raised serious concerns among many.
In an interview, Jones was asked how Virginians can trust someone who has made such alarming comments. This followed a text he sent in 2022 to Carrie Coiner, the Republican House president, in which he remarked on a colleague’s inappropriate eulogy for a recently deceased Democratic lawmaker.
Reportedly, the text message included a hypothetical scenario where Jones claimed he might have to choose between filming a video of Todd Gilbert or “two dictators.” He expressed dark sentiments concerning the deaths of political figures, stating he would attend their funerals fueled by anger.
“A lot of politics hinge on trust,” Jones contemplated in the interview. “Nothing is more terrifying than a mother holding a dying child. How can Virginians have faith in someone who said something so terrifying?”
While expressing his regret, he indicated a desire for his remarks to be taken back, apologizing for the distress they might have caused. Jones stressed that he wanted to convey genuine remorse from the bottom of his heart.
Coiner later confirmed to the Washington Post that their text exchange turned into a phone conversation, during which Jones continued to discuss his troubling comments about Gilbert and his children. She publicly condemned Jones’s statements, suggesting they were not merely inappropriate but disqualifying for someone seeking office.
According to Coiner, Jones explained his rationale during their call but continued to send unsettling texts even afterward. In those messages, he spoke about the imagined tragedy involving Gilbert’s children.
In light of the situation, Jones stated that he takes full responsibility for his remarks and felt sick upon reading them. He expressed embarrassment and remorse towards Gilbert and his family in a statement shared by various news outlets.
Virginia’s Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, along with other party members, issued statements denouncing Jones’s comments. They called for accountability and criticized fellow Democrats for not urging his withdrawal from the race.
“Jay Jones literally fantasized about killing a man and his children. And Abigail Spanberger lacks the courage to call for him to step down,” one statement read.
Youngkin pointed out the severity of Jones’s rhetoric, claiming it goes beyond acceptable political discourse, suggesting that such comments should automatically disqualify him from the campaign.
