VA puts 37,000 employees on unpaid leave as shutdown affects services

Department of Veterans Affairs Faces Furloughs Amid Government Shutdown

The Department of Veterans Affairs has reported that around 37,000 employees are either furloughed or working without compensation because of the ongoing government shutdown.

Officials noted that medical centers, outpatient facilities, and veterinary centers are still operational, largely due to advance funding provided by Congress.

“Democratic government shutdowns have restricted services for veterans and caused significant distress for VA employees. It’s only going to worsen if this continues,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. He urged Democrats to stop using the suffering of Americans as leverage to push for free healthcare for undocumented immigrants.

Collins also called for the government to reopen, emphasizing the need for the Veterans Administration to deliver the comprehensive services that veterans and their families deserve.

While some services remain available, others have been halted. For instance, over 900,000 veterans can’t access the now-closed GI Bill hotline. Additionally, about 100,000 registered veterans are furloughed and unable to get support through the Veterans Readiness and Employment Program.

Furthermore, public access to 56 VA Regional Benefits Offices has been suspended. More than 16,000 service members nearing retirement are missing out on transition information, as the Veterans Transition Contract has become nonoperational due to budget constraints. This situation also affects maintenance at the nation’s 157 Veterans National Cemeteries, although burials will continue at Virginia National Cemetery.

The agency mentioned that claims related to veterans’ benefits—including compensation, pensions, and education—are still being processed.

In the political landscape, Republicans have criticized Democrats for allegedly favoring healthcare for undocumented immigrants over American taxpayers amidst the ongoing shutdown. On the other hand, Democrats have argued that Republican leaders need to work toward a bipartisan solution to safeguard Americans from escalating healthcare costs.
