Van Jones criticized for calling Charlie Kirk a 'race monger' just one day before his assassination

Backlash Against Van Jones Following Controversial Comments

Van Jones, a political commentator for CNN, has sparked criticism after he accused Charlie Kirk of “race mongering” concerning the murder of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian national. This incident occurred just a day before Kirk was, tragically, fatally shot.

Jones took issue with Kirk’s comments regarding Zarutska’s death, allegedly at the hands of Decarlos Brown, a homeless Black man. Brown is accused of stabbing Zarutska during an unprovoked attack on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 22nd.

In video footage from the scene, Brown can be heard making a racially charged comment, which led Kirk to question whether the murder was racially motivated. He also highlighted the fact that Brown had 14 prior arrests, asserting that such a person should not have been allowed on the streets.

Kirk expressed concern about the ongoing release of individuals with criminal histories, questioning, “Why are we putting up with this? Why are we allowing so many people who have committed these crimes to keep on being released?” He noted the media’s extensive coverage of George Floyd’s case compared to the relative silence surrounding Zarutska’s murder, suggesting a disparity based on race.

Jones criticized Kirk’s perspective, arguing that there was no definitive evidence that race played a role in the attack. He pointed out that Kirk’s comments reflected “pure race mongering, hate mongering.”

After Jones made his remarks, Kirk was shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University. This led to an influx of responses on social media, with some users accusing Jones of inciting violence.

One user remarked that individuals like Jones should face legal repercussions for their comments, while another called for Jones to be fired, asserting that his rhetoric contributed to the tragic event.

Kirk, in response to Jones, indicated that the suspect’s racially charged comment had been emphasized in the media footage. He accused the media of hypocrisy for not adhering to the standards they set following George Floyd’s death.

Kirk questioned whether Jones would apologize for advocating for criminal justice reforms that he believes have led to dangerous situations, pointing to Brown as an example.

Kirk is survived by his wife and two young children.
