CNN commentator Van Jones on Monday took aim at politicians on former President Donald Trump’s running mate list for dodging questions about whether they would accept the results of the 2024 election.
Several potential finalists in Trump’s presidential race, including Sen. Tim Scott (R-Ohio) and Rep. Elise Stefanik (New York), have declined to announce their intentions. I’m refusing. They will accept the results of the 2024 election. Other lawmakers, including Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.), said they would reject the results outright if they believed there was fraud.
“This is like a kindergarten failure,” Jones said of the remarks. “When it comes to politics, I certainly accept the election results and will not insult the integrity of America’s democratic process, which is the envy of the world.”
These dodges suggest potential vice presidential candidates are repeating falsehoods similar to the 2020 election fraud allegations that sparked the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and are now at the center of two criminal cases against President Trump. suggests that he may support an election conspiracy.
“These are termites that are released into the foundations of our democracy and can later come back and destroy the entire house,” Jones said. “When you have people who no longer believe in the integrity of our elections. They’re playing with fire. They’re playing with matches, they’re playing with nitroglycerin.”
Concerns that President Trump will repeat his claims of election fraud if he loses again in 2024 are also testing Senate Republican leadership.
Jones blamed the situation squarely on Trump.
“This is one of Donald Trump’s most despicable effects on American politics,” he said. “This kind of nonsense comes from otherwise, in some cases, good, decent people.”
