Vance Boelter faces 8 charges in the murders of a state lawmaker and her husband, according to a grand jury in Minnesota.

Charges Filed Against Assassination Suspect Vance Belter

Vance Belter has been charged by a Minnesota judge with eight offenses, including first-degree planned murder and attempted murder. The charges stem from an incident involving a shooting that targeted Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as others.

During a press conference, Hennepin County Attorney Mary F. Moriarty detailed the accusations. The key charges include:

  • Two counts of first-degree planned murder for allegedly attempting to kill Rep. Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) and her husband around 3:30 a.m. on June 14.
  • Four counts of attempted murder for firing at Senator John Hoffman (DFL-Champlin) and his wife, with further accusations of trying to kill state legislator Christine Berner (DFL-Maple Grove).
  • One count of impersonating a police officer for reportedly using a vehicle resembling a police car.
  • Felony charges for cruelty against animals due to the shooting of the Hortmans’ golden retriever, Gilbert, who later had to be euthanized.

Moriarty described the investigation as among the most complex in Minnesota’s history. Belter now faces a total of 14 state and federal charges related to this series of incidents.

Belter, aged 58, was apprehended following an extensive manhunt after the shootings on June 15 at his home in Green Isle, Minnesota. He allegedly planned to target multiple lawmakers, including former House Chairman Melissa Hortman.

Federal murder charges against Belter will be pursued first. He pleaded not guilty on August 7 and is due for a court appearance on November 12.

Moriarty stressed the importance of holding Belter accountable at the state level to prevent any potential presidential pardon from affecting his sentencing. There’s currently no indication that a federal conviction would lead to a pardon.

Some details of the case have changed since the initial reports. For instance, a police officer initially believed Belter had fired while inside the house, but new evidence suggests otherwise.

Details of the Incident

On the night of the incidents, Moriarty stated that Belter knocked on Hoffman’s door, falsely identifying himself as a police officer. Upon being asked for identification, he was seen on security footage trying to display a badge. The Hoffmans eventually forced him out, after which Belter allegedly fired multiple shots.

Senator Hoffman was reportedly shot nine times, while his wife sustained eight gunshot wounds but both survived. Their daughter, Hope, was also present but unharmed.

Belter later claimed he fired only in response to being threatened by the Hoffmans and insisted he never intended to hurt anyone. However, federal law enforcement has indicated that his account significantly contradicts existing evidence.

Notebook records found in Belter’s vehicle also mentioned Hoffman’s family and their address, raising further concerns about his intentions.

On his way to another target, Belter attempted to access the home of Rep. Christine Berner in Maple Grove but found no one home. Later, he parked near Senator Ann Rest’s residence and reportedly tried to approach her as well.

Moriarty clarified that intent plays a critical role in the prosecution of attempted murder charges. Simply being unavailable (as in the case of Rep. Berner) does not negate such an accusation.

As the case unfolds, different facets of Belter’s behavior—the notebook records, his movements on the night of the shootings—are likely to play crucial roles in determining the outcome. Moriarty has expressed the community’s need for justice, emphasizing that holding Belter accountable is vital for the healing of everyone affected.

Amid ongoing investigations, Moriarty dismissed conspiracy claims put forth by Belter regarding a supposed investigation into deaths linked to a vaccine. She noted these assertions had no valid basis and remained focused on the current serious charges against him.

Moriarty reiterated the commitment to ensuring justice and accountability, asserting that the emphasis should be on the impact of the actions on the community, rather than speculation about potential pardons or broader political implications.
