Vice President J.D. Vance Addresses Turning Point USA Gathering

At a major Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi, Vice President J.D. Vance spoke extensively about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Reflecting on Kirk’s impact on his own faith, Vance emphasized the importance of a “well-grounded Christian moral order” for the nation’s future.

Following remarks from Kirk’s widow, Erica, Vance took the stage. He started with some brief comments before engaging the audience with questions covering topics like immigration, the National Guard, and the Second Amendment. Notably, many questions probed into Vance’s faith and its influence on his role as vice president. Attendees inquired about his stance on religious freedom and how he navigates parenting in a household where his wife is Hindu.

“I don’t shy away from stating that I think Christian values are fundamental to this country,” Vance responded, addressing a query about church-state separation. “Anyone who claims to be neutral on this matter might have an agenda. Honestly, I believe our Christian roots are beneficial.”

Vance criticized modern liberalism as a “perverted version of Christianity,” suggesting that while understanding marginalized communities is essential, it should not overshadow justice and civic responsibility. He made it clear that true Christian morals are crucial for the direction of America.

Continuing his argument, Vance expressed his belief that God should have a place in public life. “Claiming the Constitution demands otherwise is simply untrue,” he asserted. He highlighted a Supreme Court interpretation that has effectively banished religion from public life, describing it as a significant error with lasting repercussions.

As the discussion on faith progressed, Vance was queried about his interfaith marriage. He revealed that during their courtship, he wasn’t a Christian, but both he and his wife, Usha, chose to raise their children in the Christian faith. Their relationship is marked by open communication and a mutual respect for their differing beliefs.

“Most Sundays, she joins me at church, and I’ve told her my hope is that she feels inspired by the same elements of faith that speak to me,” Vance mentioned. He also articulated that, ultimately, it’s essential for people to have the freedom to believe as they wish.

During another event honoring Kirk, Vance reiterated how Kirk’s legacy has influenced his relationship with faith, noting her increased vocality in faith discussions, partly because of Kirk’s impact.

In closing, Vance reflected on how he strives to live as a devoted husband and father, motivated by a sense of purpose to contribute positively to society and fulfill what he believes is God’s call for him.
