Vice President JD Vance told House Republicans that putting a government funding bill on the ballot today is important for President Donald Trump's lights on for Border Patrol Goals and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Two lawmakers attending the closed door meeting Tuesday morning said Doge and the border were part of Vance's pitch to Republicans who are still undecided about the bill.
One lawmaker said Vance indicated that future federal spending cuts could be on the table at a later date.
“Vance basically said this is what we need to continue our Doge and border operations,” the lawmaker said. “And if you have time to identify and quantify them, you'll be much more flexible with Doge Cuts.”

The House and Senate must pass a federal funding bill and send it to Trump's desk by the end of Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown.
Trump has approved House Republican-led measures, a rough extension of the 2024 financial year (FY) funding levels known as the Continuing Resolution (CR).
“We'll hand over the bill,” R-Texas Rep. Chip Roy said.
House Republicans are primarily expected to bear the burden of passing the bill, despite Democrats historically voting in large numbers to avoid government shutdowns.
But House Democrat leaders accused Republicans of using the law to allow Elon Musk and Trump to continue to overturn federal bureaucracy.

A senior source involved in negotiations for the CR told Fox News Digital he was optimistic about where it was heading.
“I don't like CRS, but I trust the administration, so I think I can move forward with this,” a source said of the House Republican Congress.
R-Mo is a fiscal hawk that is generally opposed to CRS. Rep. Erik Burrison said he redoes Fox News on Tuesday morning and announced that he would “barely support the bill.”
“'Barried' is Donald Trump,” Burrison said. “He's a different maker. I'll never support this language, but I trust Donald Trump.”
