WASHINGTON—Vice President JD Vance addressed a question from Breitbart News on Tuesday, asserting that fraud is certainly contributing to higher healthcare costs, while Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, warned that “fraud will destroy Obamacare.”
During a press conference at the White House’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Vance revealed that the administration has recouped $2.2 billion in fraudulent claims related to Obamacare, also referred to as the Affordable Care Act, by ensuring that only eligible individuals receive subsidies.
Vance pointed out that the Biden administration had loosened the eligibility criteria for Obamacare without properly verifying the eligibility of enrollees, even as they incentivized brokers to promote enrollment in the program.
“You have a situation where, on one hand, brokers earn commissions for enrolling patients, while on the other, the government isn’t doing any checks to see if these individuals actually qualify for the benefits. What does that lead to? Rampant fraud,” he stated.
Vance indicated that the Trump administration is taking steps to address Obamacare fraud, including terminating enrollment for approximately 750,000 individuals believed to be fraudulently registered.
“In addition, we will implement further verification procedures. We anticipate that many of these enrollees are fraudulent, but we’ll verify around 419,000 individuals to ensure they are legal residents and meet the income criteria necessary for receiving these Obamacare benefits,” he explained.
He added, “To highlight the impact of the fraud we’re preventing—$2.2 billion—consider that an average American child receives about $4,000 in healthcare benefits each year. That means we are effectively saving healthcare equivalent to that of 550,000 children, which will now be directed to the essential services intended for them.”
After announcing the initiative against Obamacare fraud, Vance took questions, including inquiries about how this fraud affects healthcare affordability. “Well, it’s definitely making healthcare more expensive for a variety of reasons. First, many professionals are focusing on the productive delivery of care, but some are instead seeking to game the system,” he remarked.
He expressed concern for hardworking healthcare workers, stating, “It feels like an insult to the dedicated doctors, honest insurance brokers, and nurses who genuinely work hard. Some of them endure long shifts and labor tirelessly, while others profit not by offering valuable services to those in need but by defrauding the system. That certainly drives costs up.”
Vance continued to elaborate on the broader implications, “Another reason is general cost inflation. When $2 billion is siphoned away into fraudulent claims—that’s healthcare for 550,000 children being diverted. This increases costs across the board.”
“I think one angle that is often overlooked in the inflation crisis under the Biden administration—which is the worst inflation we’ve seen in nearly 50 years—results from the fact that hundreds of billions in taxpayer money are essentially falling into the hands of fraudulent actors. We know that such excessive spending leads to inflationary pressures. It’s a moral issue, but I also believe it exacerbates inflation,” Vance asserted.
Oz added his perspective, stressing that “fraud will destroy Obamacare.”
“You can’t properly manage an insurance model if you have no clarity about your enrollees. It skews all statistical analyses—insurers are worried, and there’s a significant opportunity to introduce Obamacare through private companies, especially small employers looking to utilize a choice program,” he noted. “Small employers won’t engage with Obamacare if they think that a significant portion of enrollees might be fraudulent, and understandably so.”
He also brought up a “Soros-funded lawfare group” allegedly acting against government efforts to verify the tax returns of Obamacare participants. “The Vice President and I haven’t discussed this yet, but our belief is that a politically aligned group has sued us 150 times over these concerns. They recently won a case that prevents us from verifying taxes for those on the program. Think about that for a moment,” he remarked. “Obamacare is meant for individuals earning between one and four times the poverty level, but now we can’t confirm these earnings. It allows for anyone, even billionaires, to potentially receive benefits.”
Vance then criticized Soros, expressing confusion over why someone who has achieved such financial success would use their resources in a way that undermines essential government programs. “It’s baffling to think that those with immense wealth in this country would choose to prevent us from verifying eligibility for programs that so many depend on. It’s a misuse of charitable funds, and I commend your efforts to fight in court for the common-sense checks we need,” he concluded.
