Vice President-elect J.D. Vance said those who “committed violence” on January 6 “obviously” should not be pardoned by President-elect Trump.
“I think it’s very simple: Look if you had a peaceful protest on January 6th.thAnd you had Merrick Garland, the Justice Department, treat you like a gang member, and you should be forgiven,” Vance said during his speech. interview On “Fox News Sunday.”
“If you committed violence that day, of course you should not be forgiven,” he continued. “And there's a little bit of a gray area there.”
Vance said he and Trump are “very committed” to equal administration of law. He added that he believes there are people who have been “unjustly prosecuted.”
“We need to fix that,” Vance said.
President Trump has long promised to pardon those who stormed the Capitol as Congress certifies President Biden's 2020 election victory.
This year marks the fourth year since rioters stormed the Capitol as they left Trump's rally at the Eclipse in Washington.
Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance's idea to pardon the January 6 defendants has been controversial, with lawmakers speaking out before and after the anniversary.
Vance also hinted at other plans on his first day back in the White House, including implementing President Trump's mass deportation plan.
