Vance states he will not engage in the political manipulation of the Pope’s message.

Vice President JD Vance refrained from delving into political aspects regarding the newly elected Pope, remarking that his election is “a wonderful thing.” In a conversation with conservative radio figure Hugh Hewitt, Vance noted, “Many have said you’d never see an American Pope,” adding his approval of the outcome.

Vance expressed a desire for the Pope to have wisdom and good health, saying, “We don’t know much about him, but I wish him the best. He’s now the leader of the Catholic Church, and I hope he has a long and successful tenure.” He also mentioned that politics can often distort events like the election of a new Pope.

Some members of the “America’s first” movement, however, are not comfortable with the inclusive stance of the new Pope. Vance commented, “There are questions circulating about whether he leans conservative or liberal. He’s been critical of both President Trump and myself while not challenging Democrats on certain issues.” He suggested that it’s challenging to integrate a 2,000-year-old institution into contemporary American politics.

As a convert to Catholicism, Vance conveyed his intention to keep the Pope’s role separate from political disagreements. He believes the church transcends politics, stating, “There are a variety of view points within Catholic leadership that may align with either side of the political spectrum.” He elaborated that while the church may occasionally intersect with public policy, it shouldn’t adhere strictly to political classifications.

Pope Leo XIV was elected following the passing of Pope Francis, whose death occurred amid health battles. President Trump swiftly offered his congratulations to the new Pope.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his excitement, highlighting the significance of having the first American Pope, and looked forward to their future meeting. Contrasting opinions emerged from other conservatives. For example, Steve Bannon described the new Pope as “the worst pick of all time,” while commentator Joey Mannarino criticized him for supposedly showing favor towards policies that align with opening borders, likening him unfavorably to Francis.

Charlie Kirk also weighed in, noting the uncertainty surrounding the new Pope’s stances but expressing hope that he could become a robust advocate for border sovereignty.
