Vance Discusses Peace Talks Involving Putin and Zelensky
On Sunday, Vice President JD Vance expressed the United States’ interest in engaging Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in crucial peace negotiations.
Vance mentioned that the U.S. is working to bring these leaders together for the first time in over three years of conflict. However, he cautioned that any timeline could be jeopardized if Zelensky rushes ahead before former President Trump has had a chance to weigh in.
“I don’t really think it’s productive,” Vance remarked during an appearance on Fox News. He emphasized the need for the U.S. president to facilitate a meeting between Putin and Zelensky.
“This really hinges on the president compelling both leaders to sit down and discuss their positions,” he added.
Vance didn’t specify when this meeting of the three world leaders might occur. He noted that there has been some consideration of Trump’s potential one-on-one with Putin, possibly on Friday.
If compelled, Zelensky’s presence might complicate peace discussions, Vance suggested. He pointed out that a significant barrier has been Putin’s refusal to meet with Zelensky.
“We’re working on schedules and logistics to have these three leaders talk about ending this conflict,” Vance stated.
Reports indicate that the White House has explored the prospect of Zelensky meeting with Putin, but Trump has asserted he would meet Putin independently of Zelensky.
“We certainly condemn the invasion, and while I wish things were different, we need to make peace,” Vance remarked. “The way to do that is through discussion.”
He added, “You can’t just point fingers and say who’s wrong or right. Finding peace requires sitting down together.”
Zelensky has said that any peace arrangement excluding Ukraine wouldn’t be acceptable and has worked to halt any notion that Ukraine should concede territory to Russia.
“Of course, we plan to engage with Ukrainians. I had discussions with them just this morning,” Vance shared.
This weekend, the Vice President met with officials from Britain, Europe, and Ukraine in preparation for the critical summit in Alaska.
Trump aims to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and has made it a primary focus for his potential second term.
The president appears to be distinguishing his approach from that of former President Joe Biden by positioning himself as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Vance noted, “We have substantial economic leverage, and we’re ready to utilize it to foster peace. This is a significant opportunity.”
He also mentioned that there’s growing frustration among Americans regarding ongoing financial support for the conflict, adding that if Europeans are willing to procure arms from U.S. manufacturers, they should feel free to do so.
