The article, written by Jeffrey Goldberg, claimed that President Trump became extremely upset after receiving a $60,000 funeral payment during a 2020 Oval Office meeting. Goldberg claims that Trump said, “It would cost less than $60,000 to bury a Mexican king.”
Goldberg also claimed that President Trump asked former chief of staff Mark Meadows not to pay the bill, telling him, “Don't pay!”
Vanessa Guillen was 20 years old at the time of her death. She was killed in 2020 by Aaron Robinson, a soldier stationed at the same base in Texas.
Robinson and his then-girlfriend, Cecily Aguilar, dismembered Guillen's body and hid it in the woods after the murder. Robinson committed suicide after a confrontation with police. Aguilar pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting Robinson's crime, resulting in a 30-year prison sentence.
Publication of the article sparked a backlash from Vanessa's sister Myra Guillen and the family's attorney, who said President Trump was “doing nothing but show off.”[n] Respect to my family. ”
“Oh. I don't understand how you are using my sister's death for political exploitation. It is disrespectful and hurtful to the important changes she made for our military.” Myra said on the X program. “President Donald Trump has done nothing but respect my family and Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today.”
Natalie Khawam, the Guillén family's attorney, also released a statement ahead of the election accusing Goldberg of exploiting Guillén's tragic death for political gain.
“I have dealt with hundreds of reporters during my legal career, but unfortunately this is the first time I have had to go on record naming Jeffrey Goldberg on the Atlantic coast. Not only did he misrepresent the conversation, he outright lied in a sensational article,” she wrote to X.
“More importantly, he used and exploited my client and the murder of Vanessa Gilens for cheap political gain. I also point out that the timing of this 'story' is highly questionable. I want to keep it. That's because the conversation President Trump is said to have had took place more than four years ago. Why are we talking about that now? ! ” she continued, questioning Goldberg's intentions.
“As everyone knows, Mr. Trump not only supported the military, but he also invited my client to the Oval Office and supported the 'I Am Vanessa Guillen' bill,” she added. .
Meadows also disagreed with Goldberg's accusations, writing in an X post that “any suggestion that President Trump would disrespect Mr. Guillen or refuse to pay for her funeral expenses is completely false.” “He wasn't just kind and compassionate, he wanted to make sure the military and the U.S. government were doing the right thing by following Vanessa Guillen and her family.”
Additionally, the Trump campaign responded to this claim by calling Goldberg's report “completely false.”
“President Donald Trump has spent his life caring for America's military heroes…” said Trump campaign adviser Alex Pfeiffer. “No one champions our brave military like Donald J. Trump.”
