Vanilla Ice has opened up about a particularly dark period in his life. He shared that at 27, he found himself writing a suicide note while grappling with addiction. Fortunately, he overcame those challenges, left drugs behind, and rebuilt his life in Miami.

In a recent episode of “Hangout with Sean Hannity,” the rapper discussed how his rapid rise to fame crashed down, ultimately forcing him to confront his identity. He described how his drug use spiraled until he hit rock bottom, but that experience served as a wake-up call. He made the conscious decision to distance himself from negative influences and start anew.

He recalled the moment when everything changed, noting, “I was riding the wave of ‘Ice Ice Baby,’ all those films, and then suddenly, it broke.” This metaphor highlights the abrupt end to his success.

“I was on the brink of joining the 27 club, feeling lost at that age. I felt the weight of adult responsibilities creeping in while I just wanted to enjoy my youth,” he explained.

His friends were pivotal during that time, helping him face the reality of his situation. In a bid to regain control, he changed his phone number and relocated to Florida, severing ties with toxic relationships.

Reflecting on the struggles many face in their late 20s, he shared that it’s a tough age. “Your 20s are over; adulting begins. It’s not easy. You’re waking up early, making coffee, and facing responsibilities,” he said.

The pressure, especially today, can overwhelm young adults. They often feel lost, trying to map out their futures without a clear direction.

Although he managed to quit drugs, Vanilla Ice admitted that it took years to come to terms with the very success that once nearly consumed him. A pivotal moment came during a conversation with evangelist Tammy Faye Messner while filming a reality show. He realized he had to embrace his past rather than run from it.

“I wasn’t thrilled about performing ‘Ice Ice Baby’ because that phase almost destroyed me,” he revealed. However, after speaking with Messner and actor Eric Estrada, he found new wisdom: “You are who you are because of who you were… You can’t change it; you must embrace it.” This perspective shift allowed him to accept the song as part of his journey, recognizing that it holds meaning for his fans.

Additionally, he credited his mother with guiding him toward a healthier mindset. When he confided in her about feeling miserable, she simply told him, “Put on your dancing shoes.” It was a metaphorical reminder to confront challenges with a positive outlook, emphasizing that one can’t find joy while feeling trapped in negativity.
