This behavior quickly sparked backlash on social media, where many criticized it as inappropriate, especially given the serious nature of the case concerning the tragic murder of three children. In response to the criticism, Romano later took to social media to explain that her playful expressions were intended for her family watching the broadcast.
The individual at the center of the viral moment, who was grinning and winking during the trial, has now been dropped by the publication she was meant to represent.
Romano was seen beaming at a pool camera for the live trial feed on Monday, with the video attracting millions of views across various social media platforms and news outlets.
So, why was Romano present at the trial? Vanity Fair confirmed that she had been credentialed to cover it because of her personal connection to Clancy.
In a statement to Fox News, Vanity Fair explained, “We had been exploring the possibility of a personal essay by Brittany Romano about her experiences growing up with Lindsay Clancy. However, due to clear conflicts with our editorial standards, we informed Romano that we would no longer be moving forward with her essay and that she is no longer credentialed by Vanity Fair.”
Romano addressed her critics in a lengthy statement shared on Instagram, where she asserted, “A smile is not a crime. Telling a woman to slit her wrists is.” She continued, “Over the past two years, I’ve strived to cover the Lindsay Clancy case fairly, recognizing the complexities behind a mother accused of killing her children during postpartum psychosis. The narrative has too often swung between demonizing her and probing into what truly unhinged her. Women’s mental health should always be at the forefront of this discussion.” She expressed that her smile comes from anxiety and discomfort, showing how she copes rather than indifference.
Romano concluded her post with a poignant observation: “If you genuinely cared about women’s mental health, you wouldn’t suggest harmful actions, nor would you view suicide as a retribution. You can’t claim to protect one woman’s dignity while degrading another’s.”
