Vanuatu's MV Matui ferry has sunk, leaving at least 30 passengers unaccounted for.

A significant search is currently taking place in the South Pacific after a passenger ferry, the MV Matui, sank between two islands in Vanuatu, which is located east of Australia. Reports indicate that at least one person has lost their life, with more than 30 individuals still unaccounted for as rescue efforts progress, as noted by Vanuatu’s Ministry of the Prime Minister.

The ferry was in transit between the islands of Ambae and Santo when it went down on Friday, carrying a total of 47 passengers. As part of the rescue operations, 15 individuals were successfully rescued and one body was retrieved. However, local authorities are now concentrating their search efforts along the southeastern coastline of Vanuatu, where strong currents might have carried survivors.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those grieving for lost loved ones,” stated the ministry, emphasizing support for the survivors. They also noted that families of the missing should know the nation stands with them during this difficult period.

Retired Coast Guard Captain Aaron Davenport mentioned several factors that could impact the survival of those missing. Variables such as water temperature, possible injuries, and availability of life-saving equipment play critical roles in determining how long someone could survive in the water. He added that as time passes, the likelihood of survival diminishes due to the risks associated with exposure and lack of sustenance.

The tragedy appears to have been exacerbated by disregarded marine warnings concerning adverse weather conditions, alongside the possibility that the vessel was over capacity. The ministry stressed the importance of prioritizing safety at sea, stating that ship operators must ensure their vessels are equipped with the necessary safety gear and communication tools, as ignoring warnings risks lives.

In light of this incident, the government has initiated a full investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the sinking in an effort to prevent future tragedies of this nature.

Previously, another ferry disaster occurred on August 30, when the Filo Jet catamaran capsized off northern Cyprus, leading to 14 deaths and an additional 14 individuals still missing. This ferry disaster initiated a large-scale rescue operation shortly after it began taking on water, and authorities are now looking into the causes behind that incident as well.
