Venezuelan migrant charged with assaulting officer, taking gun, and fleeing arrest

The Justice Department has recently charged a Venezuelan man with assaulting a federal agent and unlawfully taking and possessing the agent’s firearm. This incident occurred earlier this month outside his workplace.

Agents from the Department of Homeland Security began monitoring a business in Utica, Michigan, after being alerted that a person, believed to be working illegally as a delivery driver, was affiliated with the facility. Upon observation, they identified a vehicle registered to Arnoldo Jose Marquez Pulido, a 33-year-old man who was determined to be in the U.S. illegally.

Things escalated when officers attempted a standard traffic stop. Marquez Pulido initially halted his vehicle but then sped away. He later returned to the business site and attempted to flee on foot. According to the authorities, agents confronted him when he tried to enter the building despite instructions to stop.

During the scuffle, Marquez Pulido allegedly elbowed one agent and reached for their service weapon, a Glock 19. He managed to take the gun from the holster and briefly used it before losing control as the agent regained their strength. Other officers arrived and retrieved the weapon from the ground. Marquez Pulido continued to resist until he was apprehended.

Both agents sustained injuries; one suffered a bruise to his elbow and abrasions on his knee and hand, while the other had a bruised knee. Both were treated at a hospital and later released. Marquez Pulido is expected to appear in federal court in Detroit soon, but prosecutors are seeking to keep him detained amid ongoing legal actions.

He reportedly entered the U.S. at the San Ysidro port of entry in California in 2024 without proper documentation. Federal prosecutors highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement agents as they enforce immigration policies, particularly those emphasized during Donald Trump’s presidency.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon remarked that the situation undermines the narrative that all illegal immigrants are harmless. He pointed out that high-speed chases and confrontations with federal agents clearly demonstrate that danger exists.

As discussions about funding for the Department of Homeland Security persist, it complicates the ongoing negotiations. Democrats are particularly engaged in the immigration issue, attempting to draft a comprehensive funding bill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that most Democrats are ready to fund various DHS components but have reservations about Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He accused Republicans of blocking the bill due to immigration disagreements, leading to a tense exchange in the Senate.

It remains essential to remember that these charges are merely allegations; Marquez Pulido is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court setting.
