Venezuelan Government Reacts to Trump’s Airspace Comments
The Venezuelan government has responded firmly to a recent assertion made by former President Donald Trump on Truth Social, where he suggested that Venezuela’s airspace should be “completely closed.” Officials condemned this statement as an attempt to undermine the nation’s sovereignty.
In his post, Trump addressed various groups, including airlines and traffickers, urging them to avoid flying over or near Venezuela. This remark signifies a new level of tension following persistent threats from Trump’s administration against Nicolás Maduro’s government, which has been accused of facilitating drug trafficking into the United States.
Adding to these tensions, the U.S. is reportedly increasing its military presence in the Caribbean, notably with the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford in the region. Previous airstrikes conducted by the Trump administration against alleged drug-laden vessels have resulted in multiple casualties.
Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Iván Gil Pinto reacted strongly, labeling Trump’s call for an airspace closure as a “colonial threat” and “illegal.” He framed the comments as an arbitrary act that goes against basic principles of international law.
In light of Trump’s statement, several airlines chose to suspend their flights to and from Venezuela. In response, the Venezuelan government issued an ultimatum for operations to resume within two days, threatening to revoke the operational rights of several carriers. This has led to a situation where, according to air tracking services, no flights were seen over Venezuelan airspace on Sunday morning.
Following these developments, at least six airlines canceled their flights to the country. As for Trump’s next steps, there remains uncertainty, with mentions of a potential ground attack not being entirely dismissed.
