Man Charged with Murder in Student’s Death Returns to Court
The individual charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman appeared in court recently, coinciding with what would have been her 19th birthday.
Gorman was tragically shot on March 19th while walking near the Lake Michigan lakefront close to the Loyola University campus in Chicago. Reports indicate that a masked assailant fired upon her, inflicting injuries that led to her death at the scene.
Jose Medina, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national, was apprehended two days following the incident and returned to court on Tuesday to face the charges related to the murder.
During the hearing, the court went over three different cases involving Medina. It was noted that he had recently experienced a seizure, and he was seen in the courtroom using a cane.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) took to social media to express its views, stating that Gorman was “failed by sanctuary politicians.” This statement referred to Medina’s two previous releases before the alleged murder took place.
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before she was brutally murdered by a cold-blooded illegal alien killer,” the DHS remarked. “She was FAILED by sanctuary politicians who released her murderer TWO TIMES before he committed this heinous murder. We are committed to delivering justice for Sheridan’s family as we fight to remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities.”
On what would have been their daughter’s 19th birthday, Jessica and Thomas Gorman made an appearance on a news program to convey a message.
“Please help us honor Sheridan and all the other angels killed by illegal immigrants by living boldly, by speaking truthfully and loving extravagantly, and choosing American lives today and always,” Jessica, Sheridan’s mother, remarked.
Previously, Medina faced charges on April 2nd for illegal possession of a firearm as a non-lawful resident. Additionally, he encountered another felony charge on May 28th after jail staff reportedly found a homemade knife during a routine search.
On March 22nd, he was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon concerning Gorman’s death.
The DHS further mentioned that Medina had been released two times under the current administration, including one incident following a shoplifting charge in Chicago.
This recent court appearance came after an emotional testimony from Gorman’s mother, who spoke before lawmakers on June 20th. She argued that her daughter’s death could have been prevented and advocated for harsher penalties for illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes.
Although Gorman’s family was not present for Tuesday’s hearing, they attended a previous court session last month. Medina’s next court date is set for July 27th.
