Why is Message+ being shut down?

Verizon's Message+ will be permanently shut down on November 7, 2024 due to the new Rich Communications Services (RCS) protocol. According to Verizon support pagethe app will be retired because the company wants to provide the “best messaging experience.” Google Messages, which comes pre-installed on Android smartphones, already offers this experience thanks to RCS support. Additionally, starting with iOS 18, iPhone also supports the RCS protocol.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

So what is RCS? It is an instant messaging communication protocol standard and has many useful features. RCS Messages lets you send high-resolution photos and videos, share files, send messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and more. It also includes read receipts, typing indicators, and the ability to chat in groups.

RCS messaging was previously limited to chats between Androids, but with iOS 18, Apple has made iPhones compatible with this protocol as well.

What happens when the app closes?

When an app is shut down, you can no longer access or use its features. If it is still installed on your phone, we recommend uninstalling it to free up space and avoid clutter. Messages scheduled to be sent after November 7th through Message+ will not be delivered, so you will need to find another way to send these messages.

Additionally, the Message+ app will be permanently removed from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, so you won't be able to download or reinstall it in the future.

Alternatives to Google Messages

Google's data sharing policies may deter some people from switching to Google Messages. I've even received emails asking for alternative messaging apps. My top recommendations are Signal, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Signal stands out as the best option because it is developed by a non-profit organization and prioritizes keeping your data safe. I provided For detailed instructions on how to start using these apps, see here. All of this is free, but the biggest hurdle is convincing friends and family to make the switch. Unlike Message+, both the sender and recipient must have the app installed to send text messages.

Beware of scammers when switching to another app

When transitioning to a new messaging app, it's important to remain vigilant against scammers looking to take advantage of the switch. Scammers often target users during app modifications, using a variety of tactics to gain access to personal information or trick them into downloading malicious software.

Scammers may send messages that appear to be from a new messaging app and ask you to verify your account or provide personal information. Always check sender addresses and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

The best way to protect yourself from malicious links that can install malware and access your personal information is to install antivirus software on all your devices. This protection also warns you about phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.
