Vermont state senator considering all of my choices after GOP group chat backlash

Vermont Senator Sam Douglas (R) is facing pressure to resign after being linked to a controversial group chat. This follows reports that young Republican members made racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic remarks, along with some violent jokes about political opponents.

In a press statement, Douglas apologized to his constituents, claiming he was “unaware” of the harsh comments made within the chat. He mentioned that he is “evaluating all options” regarding his future and promised to update the public by the end of the week.

A report indicated that Douglas was part of a private Telegram chat where members made offensive comments. One member, Bobby Walker, previously led the Young Republicans Club of New York, and during a conversation, he lamented that a friend was dating a “very obese Indian woman.” Douglas then responded awkwardly, saying, “I just don’t bathe very often.” This kind of banter raised significant eyebrows.

Moreover, Douglas shared a comment about a Jewish colleague of Young Republican National Federation President Hayden Padgett regarding a procedural mistake tied to delegates at a national convention. His wife, Brianna Douglas, remarked, “I have a lot of faith in them and I expect Jews to be honest,” which added more fuel to the fire.

Since the report broke, multiple individuals from the group have faced calls for resignation or have been dismissed from their positions. Notable leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), have condemned the chat participants. Vermont Governor Phil Scott, once an ally of Douglas, has also requested his resignation, labeling the comments “disgusting and unacceptable” and urging all involved to step down from the Republican Party.
