Armed Man Intervenes in Michigan Walmart Stabbing
A chaotic incident occurred at a Walmart in Michigan on Saturday, where an armed Marine, who had just returned from the shooting range, intervened during a stabbing. He reportedly said he “forgot to remove the pistol from his waist” as he acted to stop the attacker.
Multiple reports from various sources noted that while many were injured in the attack, it was the Marine’s intervention with his firearm that ultimately halted further violence. Witness accounts indicated that several individuals were stabbed before law enforcement could respond. There was some speculation about potential media coverage, particularly considering the racial dynamics of the hero and the attacker.
Recurring Patterns
This incident reflects a concerning trend. From January 2021 to December 2024, incidents where concealed handgun permit holders thwarted attacks have been recorded, although they often don’t make national headlines. For instance, law enforcement indicated that had there not been intervention, it could have escalated into a significant public shooting.
In the aftermath of a recent attack in New York City, Governor Kathy Hochul responded by advocating for a federal ban on assault weapons, missing the point that those intent on killing often disregard gun laws. The shooter in New York was already violating several existing regulations.
In fact, New York City has strict open carry laws and has banned so-called assault weapons, meaning that many lawful citizens are left unarmed and vulnerable. With only about 6,000 active concealed carry permits in a city of nearly 7 million people, that’s less than 1%. The application process is complex and expensive, making it difficult for most residents to secure carry permits.
Gun Control’s Inefficacy
The crux of the issue is clear: deadly intents cannot be deterred by additional gun control measures. Even if the New York shooter had survived, he would face severe penalties—this doesn’t stop those who plan to die during their assault. Unfortunately, innocent law-abiding citizens bear the brunt of these regulations which turn them into potential felons instead of protecting them.
In many mass shooting cases, the assailants appear to be aware of restrictive laws that leave their victims defenseless. There’s a grim statistic stating that nearly 92% of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones.
Notably, among the victims of these attacks, two were security guards, highlighting the often underappreciated risks that uniformed officers face. Experts suggest that civilians frequently play a crucial role in ending these violent threats, often more effectively than uniformed officers. A survey of criminologists and economists showed strong support for allowing civilians to carry concealed weapons to counter large public threats.
While lawmakers rush to implement new restrictions after each tragedy, they neglect the reality: murderers often target places with strict gun control, leaving potential victims defenseless.
