Marine Veteran Injured in Shooting Incident

A Marine veteran was shot and killed by alleged illegal immigrants, leaving him paralyzed and unable to speak.

Jimmy Friesenhaan, a 44-year-old Texan, suffered serious injuries on May 4, shortly after becoming a father; he has been sharing touching moments with his 5-month-old daughter from his hospital bed.

Friesenhaan, who completed 14 years of service with multiple deployments, encountered a man armed with a handgun. Family members reported that he attempted to seize the weapon before the assailant, identified as Ortega Lewis, shot him three times.

As a result, Friesenhaan sustained a spinal injury along with damage to his esophagus and vocal cords, leading to multiple surgeries—seven so far.

On June 9, his family expressed concern over his condition, mentioning that he was experiencing ICU delirium, a state characterized by confusion common among intensive care patients. They were making plans to transfer him to a specialized spine hospital in Houston for better care.

However, by Saturday, there were signs of improvement. Family members reported he had more mental clarity and could sit for longer periods. “May God continue to look after him,” one relative shared online. “It’s his first Father’s Day tomorrow, and we hope he can hold his baby girl.”

By Sunday, they noted that Jimmy was able to meet with his daughter. “It was heartwarming to see his mood lift,” they added. Gratitude poured in for all the support and prayers he has received.

In the wake of the shooting, immigration authorities detained Ortega Lewis shortly after his arrest. He had crossed the border illegally before the incident occurred.

Ortega Lewis had a troubled history; he was arrested for DWI in October 2020, but failed to show up for subsequent court dates. Charges against him were lowered but eventually, he violated the terms of his probation, leading to another arrest in August 2023. After posting a $1,500 bond, he was released again but missed future court appearances.
