Concerns Emerge from Yale’s Athletic Department

Yale University’s athletic department is facing ongoing complaints. According to a report by the Yale Daily News, eight former coaches and staff have backed the concerns raised by ex-Yale hockey coach Keith Alleyne in a letter directed to President Maureen McInnis.

The letter, initially reported on March 23, outlines allegations that the current athletic director, Vicki Chung, has contributed to a “toxic environment.” Alleyne described her leadership in stark terms, stating she is “the worst leader” he’s encountered, labeling her as dishonest and self-centered. He emphasized a culture of fear and highlighted Chung’s penchant for self-promotion, claiming it leads to a disconnect with the department’s staff.

In the Yale Daily News report, it was noted that eight out of twelve coaches and staff members interviewed agreed with Alleyne’s assessment, asserting that Chung has instigated a “culture of fear” among employees. McInnis acknowledged receiving numerous letters about Chung as the university deliberates her contract renewal.

The uncertainty surrounding Chung’s contract has increased following investigations into her leadership by Fox News Digital. However, Yale has not provided any updates on her contract status.

Further investigations revealed troubling circumstances involving former strength coach Thomas Newman, who alleged that he was recorded without consent and subsequently forced out under Chung’s direction. Additionally, a female athlete left the program, citing a harmful atmosphere. There are also claims related to a property transaction involving two senior athletic department members prior to one being hired, raising questions about the hiring practices within the department.

Two former Yale employees suggested that Gurrieri and Berdo, involved in the department’s operations, were in a relationship, alleging that past managers felt pressured into accepting severance to make way for Berdo’s hiring. This appeared to create openings that were not aligned with standard hiring protocols.

An employee familiar with the situation recounted that a senior associate athletic director was pressured into leaving, immediately preceding Berdo’s hiring. This timeline seems to corroborate with Alleyne’s experiences of pressure within the athletic department.

Yale refrained from making specific comments on personnel matters, but a spokesperson affirmed the university’s commitment to robust human resources policies.

Chung, who took over as athletic director in 2018 after a term at Colgate University, reflected on her initial struggles in a recent interview at the Yale Alumni Reunion. She admitted to making mistakes and even finding herself in tears over the realities of her new role.

Fox News Digital sought further comment from Yale University but did not receive a response.
