Victim of Disney World attack identified as the assailant's mother in surprising turn of events

A violent incident at Disney World has been confirmed to involve a woman who is also the mother of the assailant.

Matthew Edward Cameron, 22, was captured in a viral video being subdued by bystanders at Magic Kingdom in October 2024, after reportedly attacking a woman near the park’s well-known hot dog stand, Casey Corner.

Shortly after Cameron faced charges for domestic battery, authorities identified the victim as his mother, Diane Marie Cameron.

A police report included details from Deputy Director Dominique Gonzalez, stating that Cameron “suddenly got mad at her and pushed the left side of his face away from him.”

He then hit her on the left side of her face, knocking her to the ground and causing a bloody nose.

At that moment, Cameron, who hails from Massachusetts, was on vacation with his mother and sister in what many call “the most magical place on earth.”

The chaotic scene was caught on video, showing a young woman, thought to be his sister wearing a Mickey Mouse hat, and their mother holding a napkin to her nose post-attack, while Cameron was held down by onlookers.

Michael Williams, who witnessed the altercation, recounted seeing Cameron physically assaulting his mother in front of his family at the hot dog stand.

Williams intervened and reportedly hugged Cameron until law enforcement arrived, an act that was also visible in the viral footage.

Following his arrest, Cameron allegedly confessed to hitting his mother out of frustration during a discussion, according to Deputy Gonzalez’s report.

He mentioned he acted without thinking when he punched Diane. His mother later informed the authorities that her son had experienced severe schizophrenia for years, occasionally suffering from intense hallucinations.

The police report did not clarify if Cameron was experiencing hallucinations at the time of the incident.

Eventually, prosecutors dropped the domestic assault charges during a court hearing in January, but the reason behind this decision remains unclear.

Both Cameron’s mother and sisters have shared pictures from previous park visits and seem to be frequent Disney patrons.

The individual who filmed the incident preferred to stay anonymous, recalling that both women had bloody noses and were visibly distressed, as Disney staff tried to shield frightened children from the chaos.

This anonymous bystander noted that Disney cast members quickly formed a “human wall” to manage the situation and mentioned stopping his recording once police arrived.

He also remarked that, despite typically visiting Disney parks weekly, this incident was certainly unusual, and he has since noticed an increase in security around the park.
