The individual targeted in an attack at a well-known synagogue in New York City is courageously confronting the actions of their assailants, who have taken away a sense of safety.
In an Instagram post, Michele Annenberg-Poma, who appeared tired and injured, stated, “I am the woman who was assaulted last night in Central Synagogue. You will not extinguish our Jewish spirit or harm our eternal light.” She shared a picture highlighting a bloody lip and a gash on her forearm.
“We will continue to offer prayers of peace, love, and joy, honoring the voices that guide us,” she added. Annenberg-Poma emphasized that Central Synagogue symbolizes inclusivity, calling it “a light for everyone.”
The 63-year-old was allegedly attacked by 46-year-old Larry Montez, who reportedly shouted anti-Semitic slurs during the incident at the prominent Upper East Side synagogue, according to police reports.
Disturbing livestream footage from that night captured angry individuals shouting outside the synagogue shortly after the Shabbat service commenced.
Montez is accused of headbutting and spitting on a security guard who tried to intervene and vandalizing $20,000 worth of religious candles. Following his arraignment, he was charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief, with bail set at $10,000.
Friends of Annenberg-Poma describe her as having a “biggest heart,” and mention her significant efforts in supporting children’s initiatives.
Expressions of solidarity have flooded in for Annenberg-Poma from various community members, including an admirer who thanked her for her bravery. “You have the right to withdraw and heal, yet here you are, shining as a beacon for the Jewish community. Many, including non-Jews, stand with you,” the supporter said. Another simply stated, “Thank you for reminding us of the light, regardless of what they do.”
Remarkably, Annenberg-Poma is also a dedicated supporter of Israel and just a month prior to the attack, she condemned anti-Semitism in a post honoring International Holocaust Remembrance Day, urging that “we must stand against the pervasive evil of anti-Semitism at every turn.”
