Minneapolis Apartment Shooting Update
Minnesota officials have identified the two civilians who were killed in the recent apartment shooting in Minneapolis, which also left two police officers injured. The victims were 63-year-old Dale Henry Spry and 61-year-old Muse A. Afrah, as confirmed by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). It’s reported that one victim died at the scene, while the other passed away later in the hospital.
The incident was initiated by 35-year-old Carlton Neal Johnson II, who opened fire and was subsequently killed during an exchange of gunfire with the police. A preliminary autopsy suggested that Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds, with his death classified as a homicide.
The two injured officers from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) have been identified as Joseph Michnowski, who has been with the department for five years, and Yahye Ahmed, who has nearly two years of service. Ahmed has since been released from the hospital, while Michnowski remained hospitalized, as shared by interim Police Chief Bill Peterson during a briefing.
One officer suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, while Michnowski underwent surgery. A third officer, Ernest Boateng, sustained injuries not from gunfire; he was cut by glass when he broke a window of a police vehicle to stop the sirens. He was later evaluated and released.
The BCA noted that at least one officer, Liban Mohamed Ibrahim, discharged his firearm during the incident, but they are investigating whether any other officers also fired their weapons.
According to Drew Evans, the superintendent of the BCA, the shooting occurred during a child custody exchange involving a woman who previously had a relationship with Johnson. Reports suggest that Johnson shot the woman outside before entering the apartment and shooting a facility worker. After that, he moved to the ninth floor, where he shot two residents who later succumbed to their injuries.
Furthermore, Johnson was reportedly facing eviction from the apartment building, as indicated by court records. Officials are still trying to determine if Johnson had specifically targeted the victims.
