Tragic Loss: Mother Shares Heartbreaking Details of Titan Submarine Disaster
A devastated mother, Christine Dawood, has shared the harrowing experience of losing both her husband, Shahzada, and her 19-year-old son, Sulaiman, in the tragic Titan submarine incident. She revealed that the remains returned to her were little more than “slush” contained in small boxes, reminiscent of shoeboxes.
Christine’s husband and son perished when the vessel sank while heading to view the Titanic wreck in June 2023. She described her ordeal, revealing that it took nine months for her to receive what was left of their bodies.
“The body was not found for nine months,” she told the Guardian about the devastating outcome.
“Well, when I say bodies, I mean the mud that was left behind. There were two small boxes,” she added, conveying her sorrow.
Interestingly, Christine Dawood had planned to join the voyage but last minute surrendered her seat to her son. The material recovered from the seabed was isolated through DNA testing, though she noted that it felt inadequate.
“There wasn’t much they could find,” she mentioned, continuing, “They had a big pile that couldn’t be separated, all mixed DNA, and they asked me if I wanted it too. But I said no. All you know is Suleman and Shahzada.”
Shahzada and Sulaiman were among five individuals onboard the Titan when it tragically sank on June 18, losing contact with support vessels about two hours into the journey.
Investigators later found debris on the ocean floor, about 984 feet from the Titanic, consistent with what they described as a “catastrophic implosion.”
“My first thought was thank God,” Christine reflected. “It turns out that when they said it was devastating, Shahzada and Sulaiman didn’t even know about it. One moment they were there, the next moment they weren’t.”
She also stated, “It was so important to know that they weren’t suffering. Even though they’re gone, the way they left makes it easier in some way,” highlighting a glimpse of solace amid her profound loss.
