The unavoidable victim of a gruesome murder spree in Miami over the weekend has been identified as a former college hockey player from New York and Massachusetts.
Roommates Sidney Caporino, 23, of Pawling, New York, and Meghan Moore, 25, of Centerville, Massachusetts, were shot to death in their apartment by Moore’s enraged ex-girlfriend, police said.
Luis Nopales, a 40-year-old restaurant worker, shot and killed Moore, his girlfriend, outside the mansion, then went inside, killed Caporino, then turned the gun on himself and killed himself.
According to police, the three lived together in an apartment.
Caporino and Moore are described by relatives as close friends and were ice hockey teammates at the University of New England in New Hampshire.
“Meghan and Sydney are known to many on campus and we are deeply saddened by this shocking news. At this difficult time, we would like to extend our condolences to Sydney and Meghan’s family and friends. continues to be in our thoughts and prayers,” President Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr. said in a statement.
The school confirmed that Moore would have graduated in 2021 and Capollino would have graduated in 2022.
“I can’t talk right now,” Moore’s relative said by phone Tuesday. “We are just shocked.”
Police were called to the girls’ apartment complex in Coral Gables at 9 a.m. Saturday morning after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots.
They found Moore critically injured just outside the apartment door when another gunshot rang out.
When officers entered the residence, they found Capolino and Nopales dead from gunshot wounds.
Moore’s college friend said her relationship with Nopales was rocky.
“We found there were some issues there,” she said. ” But at this point that is not the case. I can’t believe this happened. ”
Records show Nopales was evicted from her Coral Gables apartment in late 2023 for failing to make payments.
In a memo to the court, he said he was unable to pay his $2,300 monthly rent because he lost his restaurant job.
Ms. Nopales wrote that she had just gotten a new job and would be able to pay off her debt soon, but then she was kicked out of her apartment.
Police have not yet released an official motive for the killing.
