Wembaneyama’s Fire at the All-Star Game
Victor Wembaneyama’s competitive spirit shines through, even during the All-Star Game.
During Sunday’s All-Star Game aired by NBC, Wembaneyama was visibly frustrated after Scottie Barnes sank the decisive shot against the Teamsters at the Intuit Dome. Barnes’s 3-pointer clinched the victory for Team USA in this revamped All-Star format, which pits the USA against the World. This shift seems to bode well for the NBA, as it seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the All-Star Game.
Wembaneyama’s reaction was telling; he threw his hands up in exasperation following Barnes’s shot. A misstep by Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns and his World Team allowed Barnes to be left wide open, and Teamsters needed that last shot to secure the win in overtime.
“We’ve allowed three goals in games we really shouldn’t have,” Wembaneyama remarked to reporters. “It was just one quarter left. I thought we could have been smarter about it. This game, it’s something I truly treasure, so being competitive is just automatic for me.”
He contributed 14 points while shooting 4-of-5 from the floor and making both of his 3-point attempts. However, that effort wasn’t enough.
Norman Powell commented post-game, “When you’re up by three, you can’t let even one 3-point shot tie the game.” He emphasized that if you’re intent on competing, you need to stay detail-oriented, especially on defense.
Wembaneyama’s tenacity didn’t go unnoticed by his peers. Anthony Edwards noted that he “set the tone,” highlighting that all three teams were competitive. “Even the veterans played hard and showcased solid defense. He definitely woke us up,” Edwards added.
Jalen Brunson of the Knicks shared a similar sentiment, saying, “I believe Wemby is a true leader. His presence in this game was fantastic, and it’s clear how he influences both on and off the court.”
In the end, Team Stars triumphed over Team Stripes with a decisive score of 47-21, claiming the championship in the USA vs. World All-Star Tournament.
