Victor Wembanyama reaches for OG Anunoby's leg in NBA Finals Game 4

NBA Finals Tensions Rise With Physical Play

The intensity is definitely escalating.

San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama faced a flagrant foul from Karl-Anthony Towns during Wednesday’s pivotal NBA Finals game against the Knicks. He also had quite a close encounter with OG Anunoby, who ended up being the hero in Game 4.

At the end of the first quarter, with the Spurs leading 41-22, Wembanyama attempted to elude Anunoby’s defense. He maneuvered around Jeremy Sochan and set up a screen for De’Aaron Fox.

An incident captured in a video shared by Jared Schwartz shows Wembanyama approaching Anunoby, leaping, and awkwardly landing on Anunoby’s right foot.

Fortunately, neither player appeared to be seriously affected. However, Wembanyama continued to collide with Anunoby throughout the game, even expressing his frustrations to the referees. Notably, no foul was called during that play.

The Knicks, after trailing by 29 points, astonishingly won 107-106, marking the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history. Still, Wembanyama is facing sharp criticism from Knicks fans.

“If you think Wemby isn’t being dirty, I’d love to hear your explanation,” remarked WFAN host Craig Kirton about the Anunoby screen.

Another commentator, Buffalo Bills host Nate Geary, voiced, “He nearly took OG’s ACL,” in response to the footage.

ESPN’s footage suggests that Sochan may have nudged Wembanyama into Anunoby, drawing attention to the French player’s physicality near the boundary line.

Wembanyama has previously drawn the ire of Knicks supporters for a hard foul on Jalen Brunson during Game 3 on Monday.

In that game, Wembanyama fell Brunson to the floor in the first quarter, seemingly amused, yet no foul was assessed.

Even influential figures, from President Donald Trump to Mayor Zoran Mamdani, expressed concerns regarding Wembanyama’s aggressive playing style.

Despite NBA Senior Vice President of Officiating Development and Training Monty McCutchen acknowledging that the earlier foul was overlooked, the league opted not to impose any retroactive penalties, a decision that could have significant implications for the series outcome.

Wembanyama had already scored a controversial two points by hitting Timberwolves center Naz Reid in the throat during the Western Conference semifinals.

Currently, Wembanyama, who sustained an injury while elbowing Towns in Game 4’s third quarter, has three points. Interestingly, if he scores another point, he faces an automatic one-game suspension.

Should the NBA review Anunoby’s play and issue a retroactive violation, then Wembanyama would also be suspended for Game 5.

The Knicks, holding a 3-1 series lead, are set to revisit San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday, aiming for the franchise’s first championship since 1973.
