Van Gundy Suggests New Nickname for Wembanyama
Stan Van Gundy, a former NBA coach now providing commentary for games on Amazon Prime Video, has proposed a change to the nickname of San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Known as “Alien” due to his impressive height of 7-foot-3 and skill on the court, Wembanyama was discussed during a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinals.
As Van Gundy and play-by-play announcer Michael Grady talked about Wembanyama, Grady expressed agreement with the nickname “Alien.” However, Van Gundy quickly suggested they reconsider. “In the current political environment, you have to be careful with your words, Michael,” he remarked. “We don’t want Victor Wembanyama to be deported. Let’s think of something else.” Grady chuckled at the comment.
Interestingly, Van Gundy has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump throughout his first term, which adds a layer to his commentary style. The Spurs managed to secure a narrow victory over the Thunder with a score of 111-109, marking their second loss to Oklahoma City this season.
Wembanyama made a notable return from a calf strain, contributing 22 points and 9 rebounds in just 21 minutes of play. Devin Vassell was the team leader that night, scoring 23 points, while both De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle also added 22 points to the scoreboard.
With this victory, the Spurs are now 18-7 and are set to face off against the New York Knicks in the finals of the NBA Cup.
