Victoria Monet Discusses Pregnancy Pressure on Michelle Obama’s Podcast
R&B artist and songwriter Victoria Monet recently opened up about the pressure she felt to consider abortion after discovering her pregnancy. This revelation came during her appearance on a podcast hosted by former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Monet, who celebrated significant recognition at the 2024 Grammy Awards, noted how becoming a mother reshaped her career following the birth of her daughter, Hazel, in 2021.
However, not everyone in her professional life was supportive when she announced her pregnancy. Monet reflected on the challenges of sharing such personal news in a competitive industry.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I was an independent artist, working in the UK. As an artist, you’re not just a creative; you’re also a business,” she explained. “It’s tough to tell a business partner that your personal life might slow down your professional life, even though that’s a moment to celebrate.”
She described her experience after informing her business partners about her pregnancy via Zoom. Instead of support, she received a presentation detailing the difficulties and costs of raising a child.
“Looking back, it was quite discouraging,” Monet admitted, adding that, although her team meant well, their reactions were hurtful.
She recalled the conclusion of that presentation feeling more like encouragement to terminate her pregnancy, which was deeply upsetting. “It was an emotional moment for me, but it also ignited a determination to show that motherhood wouldn’t hinder my career,” she said.
She felt the need to ensure others understood the weight of the decision to have a child, particularly in relation to her professional future.
In the end, Monet expressed how her perspective shifted entirely. “My daughter turned out to be my greatest blessing. I once believed that having a child would derail my career, but it turned out to be a joyous and transformative experience,” she reflected.
