Heart-wrenching video footage depicts a grieving family in Iran searching for their loved ones among rows of bodies following an intense crackdown by the Islamic Republic on dissenters.
Over the weekend, numerous bodies were seen in black bags outside the Khafrizak Forensic Center, near Tehran, as families frantically attempted to identify those they had lost. Some individuals were visibly distraught, while others knelt close to the bodies, overcome with emotion. One man was seen nervously unzipping a body bag while another rushed over to peer inside.
The tragic scene coincided with reports that the death toll had risen to at least 544 as of Monday, stemming from two weeks of unrest fueled by a worsening economic crisis marked by soaring inflation and a plummeting currency.
President Trump expressed a desire for negotiations between Iran and the U.S. after threatening potential military action due to the government’s violent response to protests.
Trump’s national security team is exploring various options in response to Iran, which could include cyberattacks or direct military strikes, according to officials. “The military is looking at it, and we’re considering some very strong options,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday night.
When questioned about Iran’s possible retaliation, he stated, “If they do that, we will attack them at a level they have never faced before.”
Trump mentioned discussions were ongoing with Iranian leaders, but he indicated that he might have to take action sooner, given the rising numbers of deaths and arrests. “I think they’re tired of being beaten by the United States,” he remarked. “Iran wants to negotiate.” He noted that a meeting was in the works but reiterated that circumstances could necessitate preemptive actions.
According to alarming estimates from the U.S.-based Human Rights Defenders of Iran (HRANA), at least 496 of the deceased were protesters, with an additional 48 being security personnel.
Furthermore, more than 10,600 individuals have reportedly been arrested during the protests that started on December 28. What initially began as demonstrations over the faltering economy has escalated into one of the most significant challenges to the Iranian government in recent years.
