Political Violence Supporters Applaud Health CEO’s Murder Case

In a stark contrast to many regions grappling with the fallout from political violence, supporters of a healthcare CEO’s murderer seem eager to celebrate it.

Luigi Mangione has been charged with several offenses in connection with the shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, during an incident in New York City on December 4th.

On Tuesday, a New York judge determined that the evidence was insufficient to uphold two counts of terrorism against Mangione, resulting in their dismissal from the case. The 26-year-old is still facing serious charges, including second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Judge Gregory Caro expressed that there was no supporting evidence of intent to instill terror, propagate fear, or engage in organized violence. “This crime—the murder of a specific individual—is quite distinct from the legal definition of terrorism,” he explained.

Outside the Manhattan Crown Court, a group of Mangione’s supporters celebrated, dancing and embracing one another as they reacted to the news.

One supporter held a sign proclaiming, “Murder for commercial purposes is terrorism,” while others chanted, “Free Luigi!” These reactions went viral, appearing in a widely shared video on social media.

Interestingly, another viral moment featured a woman who claimed to be “married” to an artificial intelligence version of Mangione, saying, “I’m not joking.”

Among young leftists, Mangione has become a symbol against corporate greed, and many view him as a champion in the fight against capitalism. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Thompson, who was 50 at the time of his death, leaves behind a wife and two children.

Mangione is scheduled to return to court on December 1st.
