Mamdani’s Rally Highlights Calls for Change

Zoran Mamdani, a leading candidate for mayor, fervently spoke about the need to defund “Israeli settler violence” at a protest in New York City, just a few months prior to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, as seen in a recently released video.

During a demonstration in Midtown Manhattan in July 2023, Mamdani was captured on video repeatedly stating, “This is impossible for us to live.”

He expressed to the crowd, “We’re asking for this because we recognize that the time for contradictions in Palestine, for drawing boundaries, is over.”

Mamdani stressed the need to end New Yorkers’ complicity in the situation.

This revived footage gained traction on social media this week.

The rally occurred just before the violence unleashed by Hamas and was aimed at supporting a bill that Mamdani proposed in Albany, which seeks to revoke the nonprofit status of New York organizations that fund Israeli entities and its military.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Mamdani remarked, “Growing up in this city, I heard the term ‘progressive except for Palestine.’ It was presented as normal to have contradictions when it came to Palestinians.”

He lamented how politicians he admired would advocate for universal rights, yet draw a clear line regarding Palestinians, suggesting this was an accepted norm.

At one point, a heckler interrupted his speech, questioning Mamdani’s involvement in the matter as an elected official.

In response, Mamdani began chanting to overpower the heckler.

He concluded with, “When I decided to run for office, I was advised to keep my views on Palestine private if I wanted to succeed.”

“Let me clarify: I engage with my constituents daily about standing up for justice consistently, whether here in Astoria or over in Palestine.”
