Arson Attack on Rumored ICE Facility in Kansas City
A video that seems to show an arson attack at a facility thought to be acquired for federal detention has gained attention online, leading to a passionate response from the mayor of Kansas City.
The footage depicts a woman attempting to ignite the building on Thursday, amid rumors that it had been sold to the Department of Homeland Security for a future detention center.
“I am outraged by the federal government’s plans to imprison 10,000 individuals in cages inside a distribution center in Kansas City,” the mayor stated. His assertion is particularly striking.
The woman involved in the incident remains unidentified, and her motives are unclear.
In an interesting twist, the company that owns the building announced that negotiations for its sale to the federal government were not moving forward as of Thursday.
“At the end of our negotiations, we found out that the buyer was indeed the U.S. government,” the company explained. “However, we concluded that the sale terms no longer satisfied our trustee’s requirements for a timely closing, leading us to opt not to proceed.”
As a reporter from KMBC was preparing to cover this development, his cameraman captured the moment the woman tried to set the building aflame.
In reaction to the attack, the mayor expressed his anger toward ICE while offering a somewhat tepid account about the woman involved.
“I am horrified by the federal government’s efforts to confine 10,000 individuals in cages inside distribution warehouses, both in Kansas City and throughout the nation,” Mayor Quinton Lucas shared in a post on social media. “I place my trust in the local courts and law enforcement to appropriately handle any criminal activities.”
Some critics of the mayor noted that his earlier statements seemed to incite resentment toward the facility, coinciding with the timing of the attack.
The mayor acknowledged a recent announcement from a Kansas City company concerning a distribution facility in South Kansas City that was rumored to be the target of a large ICE detention center.
He continued, “While Kansas City welcomes any updates suggesting a halt to converting warehouses into sites for human detention, I will maintain our legislative and community efforts to prevent warehouses in Kansas City and its suburbs from being used as mass detention facilities that compromise the dignity and human rights of those held there.”
KMBC later shared the raw footage of the woman attempting to ignite the building.
