Left-Wing Commentator Attributes Homelessness to Religious Families
A left-wing commentator provided an unusual rationale for the homelessness issue prevalent in liberal cities during a debate on Bill Maher’s show on Friday night.
Anand Giridharadas, a regular guest on MS NOW, suggested on “Real Time with Bill Maher” that a significant aspect of the homelessness problem stems from religious families who opt for a biblical verse instead of prioritizing the welfare of their children.
‘We are holding a lot of your people who you failed to love and take care of,’ Giridharadas claimed.
His comments came after CNN’s Fareed Zakaria remarked that many major cities spend enormous sums of money yet have not resolved the homelessness crisis.
Giridharadas acknowledged Zakaria’s point about Democratic-run cities prioritizing the homeless over the other residents affected by homelessness. However, he also defended these cities, arguing that, “Cities are very unfairly labeled as these problem centers by Donald Trump and others.”
He continued, “If you examine the population in cities, especially those who migrate from other places—particularly the homeless and other vulnerable individuals—it’s worth noting that a significant portion of youth experiencing homelessness were let down by different areas of this country,” he added.
“The proportion of homeless youth or LGBTQ youth is quite high,” Giridharadas stated. He elaborated that many families fail to fulfill the essential duty of providing love to their children. “There are families that look at some verse in a book rather than their child’s face and choose the verse, pushing their kids away from places like Nebraska, Florida, or Idaho.”
He concluded, “And those kids land in cities like San Francisco, New York, or Chicago. We frequently hear their stories at friends’ gatherings. If you live in L.A., you’re surely surrounded by individuals with similar experiences.” He emphasized that every time someone is seen sleeping on a subway bench, it reflects on the broader American experience, suggesting that a part of America is responsible for those individuals whom they have neglected.
Giridharadas received considerable applause from the audience for his perspective.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, LGBTQ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness compared to their peers, although it’s challenging to measure the overall percentage of LGBTQ individuals among the homeless population.
This isn’t the first time Giridharadas has made news; he once suggested that perhaps Fox News shouldn’t exist anymore, as he believed its coverage incited viewers to commit acts of “terrorism” during the January 6 events at the U.S. Capitol.
