Controversy Surrounds Argentina’s Victory Over Egypt in World Cup

New York City’s Muslim mayor, Zoran Mamdani, has voiced his criticism regarding the recent World Cup match where Argentina triumphed over Egypt, winning 3-2. He described the outcome as a farce.

The dramatic win for Argentina wasn’t without its share of disputes. Several Egyptian fans raised concerns about questionable refereeing, alleging that the match was biased in favor of Argentina.

Some issues arose during the game, particularly when Egypt had a goal disallowed after a VAR review. The reputation of VAR has been shaky at times, leading many to believe the decision was unjust.

Mamdani, a supporter of Team Egypt, expressed his sentiment that Egypt was unfairly treated.

On Wednesday, he took aim not only at sports but also at a new bus plan, which he praised for making life easier for New Yorkers.

The mayor claimed that riding the bus would grant New Yorkers more time for family and personal activities. He tied this into his comments about Egypt’s situation, stating, “It’s about eating breakfast with your family. It means having time to discuss balls and strikes at your child’s Little League game. It means getting home for bedtime. It means agreeing with your friends that Egypt was robbed yesterday.”

The coach of Team Egypt, Hossam Hassan, shares the sentiment that his team was unfairly dealt with during the match. He told reporters, “We don’t see respect or fair play. The penalty was ruled out and the second incident, which should have resulted in a penalty, wasn’t even reviewed by VAR. The second goal was surprisingly disallowed for some reason.”

He added, “It feels like there was pressure from Argentina on the referee that led to this result. Life is often unfair, but why can’t we have fairness in sports? I’m not satisfied with how this match ended.”
