Video of Alleged Assassination Presented in Court at the Start of Luigi Mangione's Pretrial Hearing

Prosecutors Present Video Evidence in Murder Case

During a pretrial hearing on Monday, New York prosecutors showed a video related to the alleged assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The footage was presented in court for the case against Luigi Mangione, despite objections from Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who argued against its use. The judge ultimately decided to allow it, though not the entire video was played. The segment shown depicted a hooded figure attempting to draw a weapon during the shooting that claimed Thompson’s life on a Manhattan sidewalk on December 4, 2024. Prosecutors assert that Mangione is the shooter.

Mangione appeared in court in shackles for this significant pretrial hearing. He is awaiting a decision on whether his diary can be considered as evidence against him. This marked his first court appearance since September.

Furthermore, Mangione’s legal team is pushing to exclude certain pieces of evidence, including statements he allegedly made to police during his 2024 arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, along with details from a backpack that authorities discovered.

Initially, Mangione was charged with first-degree murder in relation to promoting terrorism, along with second-degree murder for terrorism. However, a judge concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove a terrorist act, leading to the dismissal of those charges.

Currently, Mangione is facing nine felonies in New York, which include second-degree murder. Additionally, he faces federal terrorism charges and could potentially receive the death penalty if convicted. He has maintained his innocence regarding all charges.
